Advantages of Remote Monitoring for Generators: Unlock the Power of Real-Time Data

Generators are a critical component of any backup power system, providing electricity during outages and ensuring that essential systems remain operational. However, simply having a generator isn’t enough; it’s crucial to ensure that your generator is always ready to perform when needed. This is where Remote Monitoring for Generators comes in. Remote monitoring for generators offers a smart, convenient way to oversee your system, providing real-time insights and enhancing the reliability of your backup power system.

What Is Remote Monitoring for Generators?

Remote monitoring is a technology that allows users to track the status and performance of their generators. A monitoring device is connected to the generator’s control panel. The monitor transmits data through a cellular connection to a mobile app and web-based platform. The remote monitors are universal compatibility, these solutions will work on ANY generator brand/make/model regardless of age.

The monitoring systems track a set of standard conditions from each generator set, including:

  • Generator On/Running
  • Generator Off/Stopped
  • Exercise Tracking (Weekly, Biweekly, and Monthly)
  • Failed to Exercise Alarm
  • Battery Level Monitoring
  • Low Battery Alarm
  • Extended Run Time Alerts for 4, 8, 12, and 24+ Hours
  • Engine Hours Tracking
  • Daily Generator Status Checks

The monitoring systems include a set of digital inputs used to monitor additional alarm conditions from the generator controller. Depending on the controller the monitor is connected to, these inputs can be programmed to track alarms including, but not limited to:

  • Common Fault
  • Common Warning/Pre-Alarms
  • Low Fuel Level
  • Generator Switch Not in Auto/Switch in Auto
  • Low Coolant Level
  • Low Coolant Temperature
  • High Engine Temperature
  • Low Oil Pressure
  • Over Speed
  • Over Crank
  • Fuel Leak Detected
  • & Many More!

Additional Options

There are optional accessory kits available to provide even more detail into the status of your generator:

  • Utility Voltage Detection Kit: This sensor is used to detect the presence of utility AC voltage. The sensor is placed on an insulated conductor supplying utility AC voltage to the control panel, battery charger or block heater. Designed to sense only ONE phase of AC voltage.
  • Generator Voltage Detection Kit: This sensor is used to detect the presence of generator voltage when the generator is running. The sensor is placed on the output side of the generator breaker.
  • Generator Current Sensing Kit: This sensor is used to detect if current is present or “flowing” from the generator set. The sensor is installed/clamped on either side of the main line circuit breaker. If current is present, then the generator is supplying load to the building.
  • Diesel Fuel Level Monitoring: The Ultrasonic Diesel Fuel Level Sensor is a programmable plug-and-play device used for diesel tanks. Using ultrasonic waves, this sensor measures fuel level for tanks up to 7′ reporting fuel level from 0-100%. Standard kit comes in 30′ cable length.
    • Provides Alerts for:
      • Fuel Level Below 50%
        • Fuel Level Below 25%
        • Fuel Level Below 10%
  • Liquid Propane Level Monitoring: The LP Tank Fuel Level monitor measures the propane fuel level in any above-ground or below-ground LP tank. The monitor connects to any “Remote Ready” fuel level gauge and measures the percentage of fuel in the tank. Low-fuel level alerts can be customized for different levels, and email notifications can even be sent to the customer’s propane supplier.
  • Mobile Generator Tracking: Units are designed to ‘ping’ each asset twice per day to update location, with the frequency being customizable based on your needs. Track real-time speeding alerts as well as create geo-fences. Internal, swappable Lithium Cell batteries power each tracker and has battery life monitoring, so you know when to change them. All events are logged and reported to the online portal.

Benefits of Remote Monitoring for Generators

Remote monitoring is a powerful tool for enhancing the reliability, safety, and convenience of your generator system. It offers significant long-term benefits compared to its very affordable upfront cost and minimal annual fee. The real-time data on generator performance enables early detection of issues, reduces downtime, and helps prevent costly emergency calls. This proactive approach extends the lifespan of the generator and ensures reliable operation during critical times. Remote monitoring can reduce the need for frequent on-site inspections, saving time and labor costs. Remote monitoring is a wise investment that enhances operational efficiency, optimizes maintenance schedules, and provides peace of mind, knowing that the generator is always ready when needed.
